This summer, students in the Summer Kidstop program at Rice Lake Elementary School had the opportunity to participate in a student-led service-learning project. Students decided to make tie blankets for donation to Children's Minnesota. To support the project, Kidstop families and staff generously donated a variety of fleece fabrics. In total, 10 students made 47 tie blankets. Kidstop staff delivered the blankets this past week.
"I liked that we were helping out children in need, and making them feel better," said Lucy Lind, a fourth grade student. "Because it helps a lot of people, and I like to help."
Student-led service-learning projects like this are an example of Osseo Area Schools mission to encourage students and staff to contribute to community. "I think the students learned or improved on many different skills they will need in life such as teamwork, communication, determination, and selflessness," said Emily Herdine, Kidstop staff member. "I also think the students learned that no matter how young, they can make a change in the world for the better and any act of kindness goes a long way."
"On behalf of Children's Minnesota, I want to send a heartfelt 'thank you' to the thoughtful students, faculty and staff from Osseo Area Schools' Kidstop program," said Jennifer Soderholm, chief development officer and president of the Children's Minnesota Foundation. "These beautiful blankets will bring comfort to many kids in our care, and we're grateful for all of those who donated their time and the materials to support our patient families with this kind gift."
